Why:
Canvas manually syncs grades to your school's Student Information System (SIS), which in our case is Skyward. At the beginning of the year, setting up grade book categories before grading assignments in Canvas is essential.
How:
First: In Skyward, set up grade book categories. Please follow these directions:
➡️ Skyward Gradebook Categories
*Remember:
High School: Summative = 60%, Formative = 40%
High School AP Classes: Summative = 70%, Formative = 30%
Middle School & 5th Grade: Summative = 40%, Formative = 60%
4th Grade: Do not use yet
Second: In Canvas, set up grade book categories
1. While inside your course, select Assignments from the Course Navigation bar.
2. Select +Group to add groups.
3. In the pop-up, type the group name and select Save.
**Make sure to add two groups: Formative and Summative.
**Note: All assignments you create must be in one of these groups.
Now, set up your Assignment group weights. These will match what you have in Skyward!
4. Select the three dots (snowman) menu next to +Group and +Assignments. Click on Assignment Groups Weight.
5. In the pop-up, select the check box next to Weight final grade based on assignment groups.
6. After you do that, the pop-up will change. Now you can enter category weights. After you enter the category weights, select Save.
*Remember:
High School: Summative = 60%, Formative = 40%
High School AP Classes: Summative = 70%, Formative = 30%
Middle School & 5th Grade: Summative = 40%, Formative = 60%
4th Grade: Do not use yet
**Remember: From now on, all assignments you create must be in one of these groups for synching to work properly.
